Hydroelectric Power Plant

Hydroelectric power plants are environment-friendly, clean, high-efficiency facilities with a low initial investment cost and virtually no fuel expenses. Our country has the potential to generate even more hydropower.Oltan-Köleoğlu Enerji aims to reach 100 MWe capacity by the end of 2023.

What is a Hydroelectric Power Plant?

Hydraulic energy harnesses the energy of an elevated water supply.A hydroelectric power station converts hydraulic energy into mechanical energy by means of its mechanism. The mechanical energy of falling water is then transformed into hydroelectric power.

Hydroelectric power plants utilize the energy of water to generate electricity. They convert the kinetic energy of flowing or the potential energy of falling water into electrical energy. Water released from the reservoir or dam flows through a turbine, spinning it, which in turn activates an alternator to produce electricity.

Hydroelectric power plants convert the potential energy of water into mechanical energy to generate electricity. Mechanical energy is converted to electricity through the alternator so that the energy can be put to use.

Today, hydraulic energy is the most common and one of the oldest renewable energy sources. In ancient times, people used watermills that utilized the motion of flowing water to grind grains. The source of hydraulic energy is water. Therefore, hydroelectric power plants must be situated on a water supply. The invention of alternating current has expanded the use of hydraulic energy.

The basic mechanism of hydroelectric power plants uses the potential energy of water stored in a dam. The water rushes past the turbine, causing it to spin and convert some of its energy into kinetic energy. When spun by the moving water, turbines generate mechanical energy. The mechanical energy is converted to electricity through the rotating generator and stator connected to the turbine shaft. Then, the electricity is transmitted to remote locations via power transmission lines and distributed to the receivers.
